Holy Well

Restored 1852 & 1996

St Neot's Holy Well is situated on the right a couple of hundred yards down a small lane that starts in between "Cott" and "Carlyon House". The lane is in the middle of the village on the church side of the bridge.

Restoration

The well was restored in 1852 and 1996.

Clear Waters

This is not the well where St Neot said his prayers but it does have a steady flow of cool clear water. This spring was bunded by the Victorians and the water piped to the waterspout in the centre of the village next to the phone box, thus providing the village with a clean supply.

3 Fishes

The miracle of the 3 Fishes in the Holy Well is told in stained glass in the church. (a) Neot finds three fishes in his well: an angel tells him that he may eat one a day, but leave the other two fish, and the next day there would be three again. (b) From his sickbed, Neot instructs his servant Barius to bring him a dish from the well. (c) Barius takes two fish from the well (when Neot falls sick), fries one and boils the other, leaving only one in the well. (d) Barius brings two fish to Neot. (e) Barius is sent back by Neot to throw the two fish into the well, where they are restored to life! This miracle is also told in a sculpture in the Doorstep Green.
